The Blind Pig

Since I didn’t bring anything but a granola bar, I thought I’d use my lunchbreak today to talk about the Blind Pig, a deli and bar that I really like.  It sits in a narrow space on the West side of the Square.  I believe the space used to be part of the adjacent jewelry [...]

Square Books

I have a long history with Square Books.  When I first came to town in August of 1996, I lucked into a job there and because of my love of that store and my love of the town, I turned what was supposed to be an eight month visit into a settling-down in a new [...]

Vince

Here’s a humor diversion for you.  Somebody named DJ Steve Porter did an audio/video remix on that curiously annoying Slap Chop infomercial featuring that jackass Vince:

Double-Decker Follow-Up

As a follow-up to my concern about the lack of or the rarity of disabled portable toilets at the festival, I exchanged an email or two with the people at Oxford Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.  They oversee the Double Decker Festival.  I was told very politely and apologetically  that disabled commode facilities were overlooked but [...]

Tuesday AM diversion

On my way into work earlier this morning, this moth caught my eye.  From the outside tip of one wing to the other was no less than three and a half inches.  If anybody can identify it, leave the name in the comments!

Also, I saw the picture below on digg.com.

I’ll leave it [...]

The Amp Cinema

On Sunday we went to The Amp movie theater to see a french film called The Class. The theater was built a couple of years ago and was, after about a year, forced to close and stand empty for a time.  It recently reopened under new management.  I hope whatever went awry the last time [...]

Rooster’s Blues House

My parents and my wife’s parents were both in town yesterday to see us and also to get a look at Double Decker.  We had the dogs with us and so when a seated lunch was suggested, I suggested we get a table at Parrish’s since it’s dog friendly.  Turns out that policy changed since [...]

Post-Double-Decker

We spent the better part of the day out there.  It was a lot of fun.  Got some sun and tired out early.
I saw a great deal of disabled people out, both alone and with friends or companions, enjoying the weather, the music, the food, and the art.  I hope locals made notice of this [...]

Pre-Double Decker

We’re getting ready to head out to Double Decker.   Family in town: my mom and stepdad, Tayla’s mom and dad.  We’ll likely bring the two dogs.  Weather is terrific!  My enthusiasm for some of the acts is lower than years past… higher for some others.
I’ll make a post on accessibility after, or tomorrow.  I suspect, [...]

The Lyric (WILCO)

I have such mixed feelings about this place.  First, its size and layout provide a venue for bands to come to Oxford that would likely pass us by otherwise.  In the course of the last month and a half we’ve seen Modest Mouse, Andrew Bird, and, last night, WILCO.  Amazing for a little, out-of-the-way town, [...]
